Thank you for having the courage to speak truthfully about the fact that there are not always happy endings for formerly incarcerated women and their children.

I am the program director for a nonprofit organization that provides transitional employment and related services for people reentering after incarceration. In the years I have been doing this work, I have had the privilege of working with dozens of women who have overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges to rebuild their lives. I have also seen those who have struggled and lost the battle. Last week I received news of a former client who became so despondent that she took her own life. The realities are complex, the outcomes varied. No, not precious, by any measure.
